Apple-a-Day
Apple-a-Day is a new app that encourages fitness beginners to stay consistent and explore fitness as a hobby each week. From analyzing similar landscapes to refining existing wireframes after conducting user research, my team and I developed a multi-page app from ideation to execution.

HOW MIGHT WE...
Encourage Fitness as a Hobby
Just like the age-old proverb, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away," we believe that maintaining a consistent fitness routine is the key to building a healthier, more rewarding life. Our app encourages fitness as a hobby for beginners who may be too intimidated to start their fitness journey. Users build consistency with the app’s organized trackers and satisfying reports that make you feel good about your progress.
User Research
Things We Asked Ourselves
- How do people like to keep memories digitally or physically?
- What do college students prioritize when it comes to balancing physical and mental well-being along with schoolwork?
- What motivates users to keep using their favorite apps?
- What has frustrated or disappointed users about their experience habit tracking?
How might we reduce the psychological and practical barriers to fitness for busy beginners so that exercise becomes a comfortable and sustainable part of their routine?
Things We Discovered
- Users find it most convenient to use apps with built-in “convenient UI” that does all the work for you to log routines
- Users continue to keep using apps when it already stores lots of data and memory like photos and diaries
- Users tend to open apps dozens of times a day when they view it as a social media platform
- Users are motivated to keep these apps because they gets to see friend activity

DESIGN SYSTEM
Visualizing Confidence and Consistency
Our design system evolved through many iterations, first focusing on how to create a playful and encouraging color scheme with a range of colors, to ultimately revising it to evoke subtle confidence and consistency with calmer backgrounds and an energizing primary green.
Initial Wireframes
Homepage | Completing Workout | Video Search | Community
Through many iterations, we got feedback from our target audience and had them explore what did and didn’t make sense to them.
We created high fidelity versions of each page, which was split into home, community, video search, and logging pages. We additionally added a weekly challenge to push for exploration and consistency while still encouraging rest days and breaks.
Golden Path
Future Focused
Our app includes an Apple Watch sync display, which we found to be essential for those who want the accessibility of checking their watch for the next steps, rather than carrying around their phone during their workouts.
Insights are Encouraging
One of the main takeaways from our intial user research was that users kept coming back to apps that stored lots of data and memory like photos and diaries. One of my favorite parts of this project was expanding upon our home page to add a “Recent Report” page, which breaks down the user’s biggest accomplishments, most frequent trends, and reminds them that working out should be fun.
To redesign the homescreen data, I analyzed the user journeys of our app and another that does data well and found the pain points and moments of joy to capitalize on.
Next Steps
- Emphasizing rest days within the weekly challenge
- Discovering groups and community within the social page
- Setting goals
- Refining the calendar and logging system to represent rest days and active days – changing colors, making calendar feel full, focusing on completed goals, less attention towards skipped or rest days
